Shrinking Robot Heads Band

By Craig and Charlene Sainsott

Robot Band

SHRINKING ROBOT HEADS is an industrial, voodoo, surplus trash, ethno-pneumatic, meta-kinetic, solenoid rhythm orchestra. Band members include Magneto, Speed Bump, Big Mac, Hardware v1.0, Maraca Man, Xerox Madonna, Hip Hop and the Bananaphone all backed up by the Jambo Singers.

The music is mechanical MIDI chaos; digitally amplified, resonance-induced tone-modulated sonic waves.

SHRINKING ROBOT HEADS Band made its debut at RoboFest 2 and was well received. This non-organic "band" consisted of four mechanical musicians interfaced to a computer, and vividly decorated with neon tubes, speakers, shakers, springs and neon glow bright paint. The SHRINKING ROBOT HEADS rocked, rattled, banged and buzzed to the delighted amazement of the Robofest 2 crowd.

The band members are primarily constructed of recycled home building and industrial materials. For example one SRH band member named "Maraca Man" has his arm/instruments made up of two toilet bowl ball and cock pieces which were filled with rocks to create the maracas. Another band member is a recycled 55 gallon metal barrel with a baseball drumstick.

At Robofest 3 the SHRINKING ROBOT HEADS were also featured in a live musical performance by an unlikely pairing of organic and inorganic band members. The band along with the Sainsotts and other carbon-based members of The Robot Group produced new sound mix of industrial, metal, and alternative music. This mecha-organic ensemble had just a few weeks earlier broken ground at the X/XX Experimental Music Festival. Their performance at the X/XX festival was the first in Austin to use a virtual reality (VR) interface in a musical performance. While the session did not produce any record deals, the audience was thoroughly entertained and amazed.
